About Norgesskolen

Norgesskolen has been a home for Norwegian language learners since its establishment in 2003, welcoming children from around the world annually. As a non-profit organization, the school is solely funded by school fees, without any state support. Over the years, we have grown to provide immersive learning experiences tailored to participants of all ages and backgrounds, fostering personal growth and a deeper connection to Norway.

We now offer three unique programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse audience:

1. Norgesskolen (summer)

A two-week program for students aged 9-18, designed to provide a comprehensive Norwegian language and cultural education. Participants engage in daily Norwegian classes, cultural studies, and fun activities like sports, outdoor adventures, hiking, and excursions.

Teaching at Norgesskolen

The Norwegian language classes focus on more than just language skills, incorporating culture, history, and societal topics to create a well-rounded curriculum. Teaching is tailored to individual skill levels, ensuring students feel both comfortable and challenged. Lessons are interactive and include hands-on activities like baking and crafting Christmas ornaments.

Educational Topics Covered

Each year, students explore themes like:

  • Norwegian traditions (outdoor activities, May 17th celebrations, Christmas)

  • Norwegian society (government, values, school system)

  • History and geography

  • Culture (literature, music, film, and food)

Older students (ages 15-18) with advanced language skills can also prepare for the Norwegian language test, which is required for higher education in Norway. They are guided through practice exams and receive feedback to improve both oral and written skills.

2. Akademi

Norgesskolen Akademi is a brand-new program introduced in 2025 to commemorate Crossings 200, celebrating 200 years of cultural exchange. Our brand-new program for adults aged 25 and older offers a deeper dive into modern Norway. Participants stay for a week at the stunning Lysebu hotel in Oslo, engaging in exclusive seminars led by prominent figures, small-group Norwegian lessons, and daily activities in friluftsliv (outdoor life) and culture.

This program is tailored to adult learners looking to build professional and personal connections, explore Norwegian society in-depth, and immerse themselves in both language and nature. It is being launched in 2025 to celebrate Crossings 200, the bicentennial of cultural exchange.

3. Norgesskolen Winter

Norgesskolen Winter was launched in 2023 as a new program to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Norgesskolen. A focused one-week program for older students and adults (aged 15 and above). This program blends intensive Norwegian language learning with unique seasonal activities like skiing and other winter sports. Students enjoy Norway’s magical winter while enhancing their linguistic and cultural understanding in a shorter, impactful format. Please note that there will be no Winter program in 2025.

What You’ll Gain Across All Programs:

  • Comprehensive Norwegian language instruction tailored to your skill level.

  • An understanding of Norwegian culture, history, and traditions.

  • Opportunities for outdoor activities and excursions, tailored to the season.

  • A chance to form lifelong friendships and connections with peers from around the world.

  • Tools to develop your Norwegian identity and bridge cultural gaps.

Competency Goals and Structure

All Norgesskolen programs are based on the Norwegian curriculum for linguistic minorities, ensuring age-independent and level-based learning. Groups are divided by age and language proficiency:

  • Ages 9-11, 12-14, and 15-18 for Summer and Winter programs.

  • Tailored adult groups for Akademi.

By attending Norgesskolen, you will gain a richer understanding of Norway’s unique language, culture, and identity. Join us to embark on an unforgettable journey of learning, adventure, and connection—whether in the bright summer, snowy winter, or through the modern perspectives of Akademi!
